Hair extension capsules should stay secure, comfortable, and invisible during wear. However, many hair extension specialists and clients face a common problem — capsules gradually slipping down the hair.

In most cases, capsule slippage is not caused by one single factor. It usually happens because of technical mistakes during installation, incorrect strand selection, poor hair preparation, or improper aftercare.

In this article, we explain the most common reasons why keratin hair extension capsules slide and how to prevent this problem professionally.

Incorrect Distance From the Scalp

This is one of the most basic but also one of the most critical mistakes in keratin hair extensions.

The capsule may be:

  • placed too close to the scalp,
  • or positioned too far away from the roots.

If the capsule is attached too close to the scalp, it has no freedom of movement. This creates constant tension in the attachment area. If the capsule is installed too far from the scalp, loops begin to form between the natural hair and the extension strand.

In both situations, the capsule gradually starts sliding down the hair shaft and loses stability.

Proper spacing is essential for long-lasting and secure hair extensions.

Incorrect Extension Strand Size

Another major reason for slipping capsules is incorrect donor strand sizing.

Problems appear when the extension strand is:

  • heavier than the natural hair can support,
  • denser in texture,
  • or longer than recommended for the client’s hair thickness.

Excessive weight creates constant tension in the fixation area.

This usually does not cause immediate hair loss. Instead, the process happens gradually:

  • weakening of the root support,
  • micro-shifting of the capsule downward,
  • loss of a stable attachment point.

This problem is especially common on:

  • fine hair,
  • soft hair,
  • glass-like slippery hair textures.

Correct strand balancing is one of the key skills in professional capsule hair extensions.

Lack of Proper Hair Preparation Before Extensions

Hair preparation before the procedure is not optional — it is mandatory.

If the hair contains:

  • sebum residue,
  • silicones,
  • oils,
  • polymers from haircare products,

the keratin bond cannot properly attach to the hair cuticle.

As a result:

  • keratin does not fully bond with the natural hair,
  • only superficial adhesion is created,
  • the capsule starts slipping within the first weeks of wear.

How Client Aftercare Affects Capsule Slippage

Home care is usually not the main cause of slipping capsules, but it can significantly accelerate the problem. Main risk factors:

  • applying oils or masks near the capsules,
  • using silicone-heavy products on the roots,
  • aggressive brushing,
  • improper washing technique,
  • excessive friction during shampooing,
  • washing hair with the head flipped forward.
